Caron Treatment Centers :: Commercial

It’s probably karmic. Or maybe I’m just lucky. I do a lot of work for Phil & Co., a Manhattan ad agency that only does campaigns for charities. After all these years in the ad world, it’s about time I saved my soul.

Yeah, the clients are non-profits, so you have to deal with your share of boards and bureaucracies. But at the end of the day, you’re fighting cancer or promoting philanthropy. In this case, I was promoting addiction therapy.

Caron is one of the nation’s leading providers of drug and alcohol addiction therapy for families and individuals. Every year they hold a big old gala – hosted by celebs like Liza Minnelli and Art Garfunkel. This one had one of my favorite curmudgeons: Charles Grodin. And the special guest was jazz legend Dr. John. I also got to script for former Miss USA Tara Conner. Hot stuff. Yes, she was an addict.

The challenge was to cram all this info in a “60 Second Gala.” All that with very little available footage or royalty-free music. And a limited budget for motion graphics. Matt Thomas did the original designs. I messed with them a bit when we hit deadline after the umpteenth sign off.

Ethiclips :: Industrial Short

Some industrials just don’t feel like industrials. The Ethisphere Institute in Phoenix had us create a series of twenty shorts teaching office ethics, shot in the style of The Office. Hilarity ensues.

Another monster production. Twenty scripts in three days. Shot on two REDs with a great ensemble cast, these were so much fun we had a premiere screening (who else screens their corporate industrials?).

Can you use humor in an industrial?  Yes. The client tells us they’ve been very popular. One purchaser made the comment: “They don’t feel like training.”

Sit for Good Clark :: Documentary

Here’s where domestic duty coincides with career. My daughter Luka’s third grade class was competing for a trip to Harry Potter World (some TODAY show contest) and had to make a video about doing something good.

They chose to focus on a Sit For Good fundrasier they undertook, which collected nearly $1,000 to help build a school in Uganda. I let the kids figure out the story line. Their teacher Katherine Witthauer led them through script writing.

We shot the piece in one class period – and it was very cute. But it didn’t take the prize. And the kids stayed home from Harry Potter.

I pulled together this piece on the making of, and almost felt that it told the story better. I love the score, which the music teacher thought up when we arrived. And we recorded it there in her classroom.

Luka is finally getting to Harry Potter World this summer, on her grandma’s dime.
